Believe it or not, 2016 is in full swing. What should we prepare for in the coming year?
To answer this question in full could take us in many different directions on so many different topics. So I will touch on two topics here: natural disasters and terrorist attacks.
In this article we’ll recap 2015 for each topic and discuss what this means for 2016.
2016 was filled with record-breaking weather stories throughout the U.S. and across the globe.
An Earthquake in Nepal and an Avalanche on Mt. Everest
A powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck Nepal in 2015, with an epicenter about 50 miles northwest of the capital of Kathmandu, on April 25. A magnitude 6.6 aftershock hit about an hour after the initial earthquake and smaller aftershocks followed in the region for hours. The quake toppled temples and left people trapped under rubble. The death toll climbed to more than 2,100. The earthquake also triggered a deadly avalanche on Mt. Everest, killing 19.
Deadly Flooding in Texas and Oklahoma
At least 31 people were killed in storms that began in Texas and Oklahoma over Memorial Day weekend, according to the Dallas Morning News.
In Wimberley, Texas, about 40 miles southwest of Austin, hundreds of homes were destroyed, many of them washed away, after more than 9 inches of rain fell and the Blanco River rose.
Wildfires in the Western U.S.
The dry weather and drought in California contributed to deadly wildfires in the western U.S. this past summer. Over 70 large fires burned in the U.S., mostly stretching from northern California to Montana.
Super Typhoon Soudelor Strikes the Pacific
Super Typhoon Soudelor barreled through the Pacific Ocean in August, and when the typhoon reached a record low pressure of 900 millibars, it officially became the strongest storm of the year, according to the Japanese Meteorological Agency.
Record-Breaking Flooding in South Carolina
A deadly storm devastated South Carolina in October, shattering rainfall records, breaking dams and leaving unprecedented scenes of flooding in its wake. There were at least 19 weather-related deaths reported in the state following the storm.
What to expect with natural disasters in 2016 and beyond…
No words can describe the chills I got while watching the following video titled “5 Natural Disasters Predicted in the Near Future”. Our world is definitely changing!
Now, Let’s Recap the Terrorist Attacks of 2015
As I sit here researching for this portion of the article to obtain an accurate list of terrorist attacks from across the globe in 2015, I came across the “List of Terrorist Incidents of 2015” on Wikipedia. The list was so long that it had to be split up into two lists – “January through June of 2015” and “July through December of 2015.” Here are those two lists:
Reading through this list, I realized just how corrupt our world has become. Then I thought of how important it is to bring awareness of these events to the readers of Survival Life. Bringing awareness and teaching survival and preparedness skills to our readers is one of the top reasons this website exists.
What does this truly mean for all of us for the year of 2016? Is terrorism the new “norm”?
After reading these lists, my answer is that terrorism IS the new norm – unfortunately. But, we cannot and should not live in fear. (Easier said than done, I know.) But, what we CAN do is ALWAYS BE PREPARED. Prepare for anything – natural disasters, terrorist attacks, an economic crisis…to name just a few.
Develop A Plan for the New Year…
We live in a time where anything can happen at any time. So, having the mindset and skillset of “Hey! I will survive this because I am prepared!” is important. Remember, Mindset and Skillset = I’m set!
