Survival Skills

Survival situations are not limited to natural disasters or other SHTF scenarios; they can also involve attacks by your fellow human beings. People may become desperate when they run out of supplies in the aftermath of a disruptive event. Come to think of it, even in the here and now there are members of society who want your valuables or are simply there to take you out.

Your self-defense skills are also your survival skills, especially when you are cornered. It wouldn't matter what the attackers motives are. You will need to be very alert and your reflexes should be in the best state possible. Take these tips from Doug Marcaida via Funker Tactical, listed down for your convenience as they're not indicated in the description.

Assume they're carrying a weapon.

01

Remember, even if your opponent is not carrying an actual weapon like a gun or knife, their body itself is a weapon. Prepare yourself accordingly.

Your knife is meant to be felt, not seen.

02

One of the best tools to have in your arsenal is the element of surprise. Drawing your weapon too early could actually put you at a disadvantage. Keep your weapon hidden until you're absolutely certain you need it, and let your body language do the talking.

Use deception to close the distance.

03

Not showing that you have a weapon could give your opponent a false sense of security, causing them to close the distance between you as they move in for an attack. This gives you an opportunity to brandish your weapon and use more lethal force if necessary.

Do not play the MMA game in a life or death situation.

04

If you are assuming that your opponent is carrying a weapon, then you should never use MMA tactics to fight them to the ground as this could leave you in a vulnerable position. Stay on your feet at all times.

When weapons are involved, fight dirty.

05

Some people believe in “fighting fair,” which is a good mindset to have in some situations. When your life is on the line, however, Doug Marcaida says to do whatever it takes to survive — even if that means abandoning chivalry.

Do not fight unless you have to.

You should never got out looking for a fight, but be ready and equipped with the knowledge to protect yourself if you ever find yourself in one.

6 Ways to Survive in a Fight

  1. Mark Walker says:

The first rule of knife fighting is, no matter how good you are at it, the other guy will always be better. Remember also that a small knife is not less dangerous than a large knife. Because the human body is flexible and compressible, a 4″ blade can create a wound 9″ deep.

  2. Eva Maria Huschka says:

I am 87 years old and a woman. What do you suggest I use in self defense?

    1. Anonymous says:

pepper spray and a very loud whisle, and always keep them handy when out and about.

  3. Do you have a CD or a DVD to play on the computer that shows and gives instructions on how to fight. That is how to defend yourself as well as how to defeat your opponent or more than one fighter? How much are they to purchase? I’m looking for instructions on how to fight or not fight. And what to do at the start of a confrontation. The proper stance, position, and being prepared at tje start of any confrontation.
Thanks for the information. I hope you have something that can make someone be ready and NOT the victim of any kind of assualt, fight, robbery, and etc..
