How to Protect Yourself from an Active Shooter

Arm Yourself

Terrorist attacks have been all over the news lately. Thus, causing many to wonder, what they would do if caught in the same bad situation.

Here we will explore the ways you can protect yourself and avoid being a casualty.

Two of the biggest terrorist attacks in recent history happen within a few weeks of each other. First in Paris, France, then San Bernadino, California.

This is self-defense and awareness has been at the forefront of many people's minds.

In the video below, Sheriff Wayne Ivey of Brevard County, Florida explains why you need to prepare. He also explains what you can do to protect yourself for an active shooter scenario.

Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey: Be Ready And Be Armed For An Active Shooter Incidents!

Sheriff Ivey emphasizes the importance of protecting ourselves. This includes naming the enemy and standing together as a country to fight the threat of foreign and domestic terrorism.

He encourages every man and woman to get their concealed carry license and have a weapon on their person at all times.

Realistically, we know not everyone will have a weapon on them all the time. So, if you find yourself without a weapon, here's what you should do next.

Run, Hide, and Fight

If you find yourself unarmed in an active shooter scenario, Sheriff Ivey recommends the following course of action.

Run: Think beforehand about how to escape. Don't stop to collect your things. Warn others to stop them from entering the dangerous area.
Hide: Get out of view, preferably behind a locked, barricaded door. Silence your cell phone. Stay quiet. Wait for first responders to arrive on the scene.
Fight: If you are unable to escape, you will be forced to face your attacker. Arm yourself with anything available.

Important note: Remember to stay calm and collected so you can put this information to good use for your own safety and survival.

As a parent myself, I have certain reservations on active shooter drills. It is also potentially training a would-be school shooter (a topic we'll discuss some other time).

This is why I try to inform myself as much as I can about surviving an active shooter. I then try to relay this helpful information to my own kids and to anyone appreciative for these tips like you.
