Approximately 11 million people in America carry their guns as a lifestyle choice. A large portion of those are women, proudly exercising their right to take personal security seriously. However, out of those women, there are a few who would still like to exercise their right to look feminine as well! Burdened with bulky, masculine belts and forced to wear jeans or pants tough enough to stand the weight, many women are desperately seeking options in order to feel like the pistol-packing ladies they really are.  Thankfully there’s another way to stay armed without sacrificing your sense of style.

There are few things that make a woman feel lighter and prettier than a good dress. Finding the right one to allow you to carry concealed is not as hard as it seems. It’s simply a matter of choosing the right fabric and the right style.

Style is Everything

When you’re carrying concealed in a dress, you will still have to wear something to keep your firearms and accessories anchored to your body.  Most women choose shorts capable of accommodating a firearm belt in order to accomplish this.  Jean shorts are the best bet as they are not only form fitting, but tough enough the support the weight of your gear. The last thing you want is to spend your days yanking up your jeans and belt as they slip down from the weight.
Once you’ve secured your jean shorts, holsters and all, it’s time to find a dress to properly conceal them.

Any style of top is acceptable when you’re making your choice, but it is important to ensure that it has an empire waistline and a full skirt. The skirt should fall no longer than your knees as well.  You’ll have to raise the skirt in order to access your weapon and you don’t want to loose valuable time tangling with too much fabric.
In order to conceal your weapon packed shorts even further, make sure that you choose a dress that has a dark, preferably patterned fabric.  The pattern and colors will work to conceal any telltale lumps or bumps that might be visible as you move.

Substance? Just as Important

There is an art to carrying concealed in a dress beyond choosing the right fashion. You need to be confident in your abilities to draw your weapon and reholster with accuracy and speed. If this is your first time melding firearms and dresses, this might take a bit of practice.

1. Carry Behind Your Hip

In order to be undetectable in a dress, you are going to need to holster your weapon at your lower back toward your hip. Not only will the dress cover the ‘bulge’ much better, but it is easier to access in a hurry than muddling with fabric as you try to reach your front or side.

2. Lift Your Skirts!

Although your first reaction may be to instinctively reach for your belt or chest, when you’re in a dress you need to train yourself to grab for your hem first.  Taking your weak hand, grab the hem and pull it up to your waist and out of the way. This will expose your shorts and make it easy to quickly grab your pistol.  This is going to take some practice! It’s best to spend some time before debuting your new fashion perfecting this move so that you are prepared should the occasion arise.

3. Grab and Aim

Using your strong hand, take a firm grip on the firearm. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger.
Now that your skirts are out of the way, bring the weak hand to support the firearm and extend in the direction of your target.

Pushing forward with your strong hand while pulling back with the weak will help to absorb some of the recoil should you need to fire your weapon.

4. Holster It!

Unfortunately holstering is one of the number one areas in which gun owners accidentally injure themselves. The key is to go slow and calmly. Now that whatever drama necessitated you drawing your weapon has passed, relax and focus on safely putting your firearm away.

Rotate the gun and slide it back down into your behind hip holster.
If you are a female gun enthusiast you are already in the minority when it comes to ‘feminine interests’ – why not be proud of it?  You’re not a victim, you’re not defenseless – you are a responsible and intelligent human being who simply isn’t taking any chances. Does this mean you can’t enjoy the cool freedom of a summer dress? Absolutely not. One of the best things about being a female in America is the ability to have it all – enjoy it!
