Holster Review: Alien Gear Cloak Mod

If you've been reading Gun Carrier for any bit of time now, you know that I like Alien Gear's products. The designs are simple, their warranty is excellent, and personally speaking, I have not had any problems with any of Alien Gear's holsters.

I ran into Alien Gear at SHOT show 2016, which was the first time I saw their soon to be released paddle holster. I'll admit that I was stoked because I do employ this method of carrying my gun from time to time. After having this holster for nearly 8 months (hey, I'm behind schedule, what can I say?), I'm happy to offer my thoughts on it –

The Good:
The Cloak Mod, as it's called, has some great features. It comes with the Alien Gear warranty, and the ability to swap shells for as long as you need to. In other words, if you sell your Springfield to buy a SIG, you can just exchange your plastic shell to the new gun. It really is that simple.

Plus, having one holster for many guns, that isn't a cheaply made (not to mention dangerous) “universal” holster, is a great thing, too.
The holster seems to be of good quality that offers the ability to get a full combat grip from the draw. When your life is on the line and you've got no time to re-adjust your hand, this is all-important.

The rubbery-ish part that helps hold your gun in place.

Another thing that's great, is that there are already aftermarket accessories for their latest holster. So, if you want to mount your gun in your car, you can. Or, you can stick it on the backside of your nightstand, etc. All you need is to buy that part. It's a great idea.

The Mod is of modular design. What this means is that you have the ability to wear it as a paddle holster, or a belt-slide where you slide your belt through the loops.
Finally, AG seems to use good-quality parts on their products. Whether it's the leather Cloak Slide, the neoprene backed Cloak Tuck 3.0, or this Cloak Mod, they use good-quality stuff which is made apparent by their warranty. Anytime a company is willing to stand behind what they sell, you can bet that you're getting something great.

The Bad:
Really, the only thing about this holster that I do not like, is the fact that it's so bulky. I mean, it is really bulky. If you carry concealed, and appreciate your gun not printing on your clothes but still want an excellent warranty on a good holster, go with something else like the Cloak Tuck 3.0.

Then again, I'm not sure they were going with “concealed carry” when they thought this holster up. If you're carrying open, or don't care if you print, this may be a good option for you.
If you have been using any of their holsters, you appreciate the fact that you can cant your pistol for the best and most comfortable draw. While you can still tilt it, it isn't as easy to do with the Cloak Mod.

Another view of the two holsters, notice how much bigger the Mod is.

The Conclusion:
So, while this holster seems to be about as good as their other holsters, I won't be wearing it around town. It's just too big for me and what I carry. That being said, if I do decide to open carry or start shooting competitively, this may be an option for me going forward.

For a price tag of $47.88, it's a good deal if you're looking for this type of holster. What do you think? Is this a holster you'd ever consider wearing? Let us know in the comments below. Then, make sure you like Gun Carrier's Facebook Page.
