Throat Strike Tutorial for Self-Defense

WARNING!

You will never use what I teach unless your life or the lives of your family are on the line. Do not fight for ego or pride. My B.E.T. System should only be used in a life-or-death situation.

Learning Self-Defense Tactics and Maneuvers

In my B.E.T. “Target Based” Self-Defense System I teach people to strike specific vital targets on an attacker's body. This is in order to cause a somatic reflex to open up a secondary target in order to eliminate the threat within seconds.

The strike I'm demonstrating in this video is a Trachea or throat strike using the ulna bone of my forearm.

I do not teach overly complicated techniques, that you will not remember in a life or death situation.

In this video, I am simply turning my body into the attacker and striking their trachea with the ulna bone of my forearm. I am also showing you how to simply move through the attacker with your ulna bone in a fixed position.

In addition to the strike, I will move my body weight through the attacker in order to cause additional injury so I can eliminate the threat as fast as possible. I can also either move on to another threat (second attacker) or clear the scene.

I chose the trachea as a target because it is the main pathway of air to the lungs.

If I shut down my attacker's ability to breathe, they will quickly become non-functional and will no longer be a threat to myself or my family (if they are with me at the time of the attack).

Crushing the trachea will cause the attacker to asphyxiate and for their hands to go to their throat and will also cause the attacker to panic. Striking the trachea will open a secondary target where I would compound the injury process by attacking another target.

Practicing the Throat Strike with a BOB

In this video, I am also showing you how to practice this strike using a body opponent bag (BOB) and also a heavy bag. Most local gyms will have this type of equipment for you to practice, otherwise, you can purchase through an online or local store.

I like using a BOB because it is more lifelike. You could also practice with a friend, but you need to be very very careful and move very very slow in order to avoid injuring your practice partner.

Is the throat punch effective? I'm sure you wouldn't want anyone to punch you in the throat, but in self-defense, you'd rather give a throat strike damage to an attacker, instead.

Different self-defense techniques work differently for different kinds of attackers, so the more techniques you know, the better. Only exercise with caution and think before you make the call or move.

    1. Robert Cook, Sr. says:

    2. Victor,
You’re welcome. I have a lot more videos to show everyone. Once SurvivalLife.com posts them. Thanks, Coach David

  2. Anita York says:

Very instructive! Watching you demonstrate this technique certainly shows the proper use of it and makes one feel able to face an attacker with purpose and confidence. Thanks so much for sharing this!

    1. You’re welcome. Coach David

  3. Grant says:

This throat strike is one with powerful consequences for the attacker providing you can get close enough to perform it without getting knifed or shot.

    1. Great Grey says:

Hey if I’m being stabbed I sure don’t my attacker to keep stabbing me and getting away.

      1. Great Grey,
        I like it! Coach David

    2. If you have to opportunity to escape, then escape. But if you are trapped in a public bathroom stall or trapped in a bedroom with your family their are you going to escape? No. You better figure out a way to survive. Survival Life! I teach people how to survive a worst case scenario. What are you willing to do to survive? I had rather get stabbed once and take out the attacker in order to save myself and others than to not no how to eliminate the threat and get stabbed 60 times or allow them to kill others. Thanks for the comment, Coach David

  4. Tammie says:

Great video!! Thank you for helping me feel more secure! Going to show it to my Mother, as well!

  5. Kim says:

This looks good, but how does this work for a 5′ 2″ woman? Not sure this would work if your attacker is much bigger than you are.

    1. Marv says:

If you’ve EVER had your trachea punched even slightly, you’d KNOW he’s going DOWN!! 5’2″, not to worry.

      1. Marv,
        Nice. Coach David

    2. Kim,
I only showed someone striking the trachea from a standing position. Being 5’2″ doesn’t matter if you end up mounted on top of your attacker. Coach David

  6. Bill says:

From what I read, getting in close to your attacker as quickly as possible and as he says, causing as much damage as possible reduces the amount of damage you will incur in an attack. As others have pointed out, an attacker with a knife close in can take out their intended victim even when the victim is armed. Seems to me the same with these kinds of moves.

    1. Bill,
      You got it. Coach David

  7. Kevin says:

Remember ladies and gentlemen striking the throat is considered deadly force. You are creating a substsansial risk of death or serious bodily harm.

I’m not saying don’t learn/use this technique but understand that legally speaking this technique is the same as shooting someone with a firearm, and requires the same level of justification if you don’t want to be the one going to jail.

Stay safe (LEO 4 1/2 years).

    1. Kevin,
That is the point! If you’re attacker is either incapacitated, unconscious or dead, then they are no longer a threat. My system is only to be used in a life or death situation. Basically, if you had a gun would you pull the trigger. I am just teaching you how to be the gun. As an LEO, you would never use my system to restrain anyone, you would only use it when your lethal force continuum allows you to use deadly force. Thanks for the comment, Coach David

  8. wayne says:

Good Idea to have open hand self defense instruction, but terrible execution. That is very sloppy with no exit strategy and leaves your body wide open. Anyone with minimal training will kill or maim you if you rely on that strike. I reccomend everyone do themselves a favor and take one or two training sessions a week at a mixed martial arts school, or self defense academy.

  9. Bob Nichols says:

That is a DEATH blow. Do that ONLY when you must kill to save your life.
Never hit with the fist, it will just break bones in your hand if it lands anywhere except in the solar plexus or the belly. Always use the forearm to strike the Neck, the floating ribs.
A five pound blow to the Adams Apple will cause breathing problems – much harder and it is a death blow.
The way the guy was using is forearm he could easily follow thru with an elbow the the jaw.
The best knockout blow is to the neck, the Rib shot can rupture the spleen. I had a cousin who was hit is the short ribs by a baseball pitch the ruptured his spleen and killed him.

  10. Delilah says:

Love your moves, this is what I refer to as (No Mercy) because in the real world that is full of violence, basic self defense moves will not really do much damage to an attacker, that’s just my opinion!

I am a Woman Self Defense Instructor and the type of Self Defense Teaching I prefer is ‘No Mercy Extreme Self Defense however, applied (Only) in a life or death situation.”

Standard self defense is created to attack and escape, but sometimes the situation calls for a more aggressive attack than basic self defense, so why not be prepared?

Mastering your techniques will take commitment but that’s what its all about at the end of the day, right, commitment to your Art!

    Thanx Delilah
