This is Ted Gundy, a WW2 sniper. He joined the army in 1944 when he was just 19 years old, fresh out of high school. Ted was deployed as an Army Sniper and fought at the Battle of the Bulge. Two weeks after the Battle of the Bulge, Ted was on patrol in Germany and was hit by an artillery barrage losing his right leg below the knee. This 86-year-old WW2 veteran shocked everyone, including his Army Marksmanship Unit coaches. Even after all those years he proved that he was still as good a sniper as he ever was.

He was awarded the Black Hat, the grandest prize an army marksman can earn. Only about 8 black hats have been presented to non members of the Army Marksmanship Unit (AMU). Ted was given an opportunity to hit a target at 1,000 yards with modern equipment. He was coached by soldiers from the army marksman unit, SFC Jason St. John and SFC Robby Johnson, two time international champions.

Ted then prepares to take a shot at 1,000 yards. He is using the latest technology for this shot, a custom Remington 700 rifle. The Remington 700 is known to be one of the most accurate rifles in the world. To make a shot at this range, snipers usually work in teams. This team consists of the spotter and the sniper.  The spotter takes in the weather conditions, or as they like to call it, environmentals. Once the calculations are made, it’s up to the shooter to take the shot. The spotter will give the go-ahead and the sniper has 10 seconds to take the shot or they have to recalculate their environmentals.

Ted skillfully places three shots to the head

Ted takes three shots and all of them are on target. Ted’s first shot is a headshot and his next two shots are both shots to the mouth. The AMU snipers were amazed at this ability. He had a five inch grouping at a 1,000 yards, which above the standards set for them.

GREAT – Only thing better if he walked it down to the GONG. But then that would not be a 5″ group. Perhaps best is how the Experts respected him.
