The YHM Black Diamond Specter is a rifle made for the anticipated burdens of law enforcement. It offers a skeletonized rail system for lighter carry on extended fieldworks.
YHM Black Diamond Specter Police Rifle
I remember the first time I held the YHM Black Diamond Specter – I stared at it wondering what this fine looking rifle is capable of. A firearm shouldn't just look good and do nothing, right? So one thing I noticed was the diamond patterns on the hand guard and barrel. Sure enough, there's a good reason it's made that way and not just mere aesthetics. The metal taken to create those diamond pattern holes decreases the weight of the firearm as well as provide a sturdy free-floated handguard without compromising strength. There's more than meets the eye in this tactical weapon from Yankee Hill Machine.
This semi-automatic rifle shoots calibers 9mm, 5.56mm, 6.8 SPC, and 300 Blackout with a maximum magazine capacity of 30 rounds. Its 16-inch 4140 steel barrel has a matte black finish and YHM flip-up sights on both front and rear. It also features 6-position stocks, all these making up the rifle's overall weight of 6.9 lbs.
Ease of Use and Performance
It's impressive how light and comfortable it felt carrying this rifle although it looks fully equipped. The sights are great as expected and made by YHM themselves. I shot more or less a hundred rounds with this black diamond and it's slightly more accurate than the model 57 or so I noticed. As a tactical rifle, there's no question about its durability and functionality at any given time in the field of duty.
Pros and Cons
The upper receiver of the YHM Black Diamond comes completely assembled with bolt carrier group, charging handle, handguard, gas block, and barrel. The diamond pattern holes between the Picatinny rails does not only reduce the rifle's weight but also enhances cooling of the barrel. As much as this feature contributes positively to the firearm, the barrel itself also has diamond cutouts which I don't find useful except for the gun's aesthetic sense.
Overall Verdict and Price
This rifle has all the right characteristics for tactical use and a great buy at around $1555. Yankee Hill Machine has done a wonderful job of incorporating useful features and aesthetics on the upper receiver. Reducing some of the load carried by law enforcers is a huge help for them to be more effective in what they do.
