The Aquamira Emergency Water Straw

emergency water straw

Late last year I gave you guys a little insight into my personal EDC kit, and inside it there was one very important piece of gear that my friends had been asking about.

The Aquamira Emergency Water Straw

I love this filter for quite a few reasons:

-It's very small

– The Straw portion is extremely Flexible.

This allows it to fit just about anywhere (I  keep mine inside a zip-lock bag, folded and stuffed inside of a stainless steel water bottle).

-Filters up to 20 gallons of water ( 50 for the “pro” model)

-And it has fairly inexpensive replacement filters.

I recently received an email from the guys over at beprepared.com.

They are having a great sale on these water filters and I wanted to share it with you!

They normally run around $14.00 or more, but these guys are offering it for only $9.99

I don't know how long this sale is going to last but at this price, everyone should get their hands on at least one of these. ( I keep several of them in multiple places.)

Are they the BEST water filters, no not necessarily.

But they are a great filter to carry in a day pack, an EDC, or just as a backup to your more expensive filters.

One caveat to beprepared.com  They have flat rate shipping.  This is great for larger purchases but if you only buy one of the straws you will be paying 6.00 for shipping.

My advice would be to look around, they have a ton of items that range in price from inexpensive to… WOW, that's a lot of dough!

But again with camping season coming up now is a great time to grab a few of these filters before they go back up in price.

Do you have any other suggestions that we should know about?

Let me know.

This filter goes down to 2 microns. It won’t filter out bacteria which goes down to .2 microns and virus which goes down to .02 micron. So to be safe, you should get a .02 micron filter size.
The LifeStraw Personal Water Filter (amazon about $22) goes down to .02 microns. That was a quick search. there are probably others.

At 22$ it looks cheap for a 0.02 micron absolute porosity filter. I checked the specs and it gives up to 0.2 microns. In the description it gives 99.9999% (Log 6)reduction of Bacteria and only 99.9% (Log 3)reduction in Protozoan and Parasite, this is puzzling since Protozoan and Parasites are larger than bacterial so the performance should be better for these than for Bacteria.Looks to me a kind of market hype.
I recommend the Sawyer Point Zero Two purifier, smaller in size, works as a straw and as gravity feed, good up to 1 million gallons, it can be maintained with a simple back washing (syringe provided). I use it frequently in less than amenable places in Africa and it has never let me down. It is pricey at about 130$ apiece but, given the life of the filter, it is less expensive than many other apparently cheaper filters.

I recently bought a LifeStraw. 20$ and it goes down to .2 microns for bacteria and up to 264 gallons of fluid versus 20-50 gallons. self contained and much more easily used on the fly then needing to attach a hose. Does not go down to .o2 microns as above mentioned, but its better than 2 microns. Take a look, I’m a fan.

I personally believe that “better than….” is not an option when it comes to filter, they are indeed an emergency method for getting water but I see no point for looking for anything else than top, 100% safe performance.

I have recently obtained a paper title “SAFE WATER” from the New England Historical Living Society in Australia, a group of historical trekkers specialized in 18th century living history. A very comprehensive document if anyone wants a Pdf copy please let me know and I’ll be glad to oblige via e-mail.
