Defcon CAB is what an AR bag should be
On a recent range outing, a friend showed up with a bag that made me think he brought a folding chair. I resisted the urge to look askance—this wasn’t after all, a sitting kind of exercise.
A few seconds later, I scolded myself for thinking this tough guy would bring a chair to the line. After undoing the zipper on the 26-inch long case, he unfolded it like two sides of a book.
A quick of the velcro flaps on the newly exposed pockets revealed a neatly packed AR upper and lower. He lifted the halves of his carbine out, pinned them together, and slung the rifle over his shoulder.
The whole process from setting the bag on the table to having a slung rifle took about ten seconds.
I had to ask about the bag. “It’s called the CAB – Defcon Compact Assault Bag. It’s good for when you have nosy neighbors who hate guns, but you have to carry them in and out of the driveway. It doesn’t look like a gun in here,” he said, patting the bag.
Indeed, he had me fooled. The bag is made to accommodate the upper and lower of AR/M4 platform carbines. Generous flaps and closures prevent scratches in transit, yet allow for quick access.
There’s plenty of room for rail-mounted attachments. Thick padding protects the gun and accessories from impact, though I wouldn’t go dropping it off a roof.
On the outside, the bag has a padded, adjustable shoulder strap that can be moved for carry over either shoulder. There are two outside pockets made for range-friendly use.
Inside these large pockets, webbing dividers keep up to four magazines in orderly fashion. There’s also a place to secure a notebook, ID, and pens.
The Defcon CAB looks to be a great choice for compact AR/M4 carry. It discreetly goes from the range to town, looking distinctly unlike a gun case and therefore being less noticeable to thieves and, as my friend puts it, nosy neighbors.
Black is the only available color, keeping it looking like boring office gear. This bag is so tactical, you can’t even tell it’s tactical. For $34.99, available on the Defcon Tactical Gear website, it’s a small price for portable insurance that also carries your carbine and accessories.
