Guns & Ammo Reviews

The Windham Weaponry SRC is a special rifle made by the company's Carbon Fiber Division. It incorporates more carbon-fiber-infused polymer to enhance this AR's strength.

Windham Weaponry SRC: Carbon-Fiber-Infused

In the conversation of top quality AR-15 rifles, Windham Weaponry is always a trusted name. I presume it's always a fine tactical weapon everytime I hear about a new model from them, but of course, I'm also intrigued about what new features this firearm brings to the table.

The Windham Weaponry SRC (sight ready carbine) is built for shooters who plan to use their own optics apart from the factory-made ones. This is just a portion of the neat new features this rifle offers as Windham is always on track with the competition. More gun-filled carbine details will be given as we move along.

This semi-automatic rifle utilizes a gas-impingement system and measures 16 inches in barrel length. It shoots .223 and 5.56mm calibers and has a magazine capacity of 30 rounds. A Picatinny rail gas block is built in to make way for your preferred optics instead of the usual sights pre-installed in other AR-15 models. It has a hard coat black anodized finish and features a 6-position telescoping buttstock. The total weight of this rifle is 6.3 lbs.

Ease of Use and Performance

The durability and comfort of this SRC are enhanced by its carbon-fiber-infused polymer. Windham Weaponry has done a pretty good job with this rifle's accuracy, performing exceptionally for a standard 16-inch barrel configuration carbine.

It has a little bit more kick though compared to heavier rifles but manageable for the shooter. Sight acquisition will go hand in hand with your preferred optics. I had the opportunity of testing this rifle in the range a few years back, and it's just a remarkable experience!

Pros and Cons

I have mentioned this a few times already, but it's necessary for me to highlight a considerable portion of this rifle's upper and lower receiver made of carbon-fiber-infused polymer as opposed to forged aluminum. What's the advantage? Aside from carbon-fiber being lighter than aluminum, this material also cools faster.

The handguard also has double heat shields, which are very useful for extended firing. Seasoned AR users are very much aware those handguards can get really hot. Although this rifle is made for you to install your own optics, I still think it would've been better if it comes with standard factory sights out of the box.

Overall Verdict and Price

This AR is definitely a great buy at around $1040. Think of the manufacturer's ingenuity by combining carbon-fiber material to reduce weight and enhance the rifle's durability. These features could lead to better manufacturing standards in the AR-15 category. It's just superb tactical innovation by Windham Weaponry!

I couldn't help but think about combining this SRC's technology with the HBC model's heavy barrel design. You get a lightweight carbon-fiber-infused upper and lower receivers, and extra weight on the barrel for reduced recoil and faster follow up shots. The good guys at Windham Weaponry are smart enough to sell these rifles individually, than introduce a sort of hybrid model with all these neat features.
