Guns & Ammo Reviews

The Mossberg Maverick 88 is part of the company's fine innovations in the world of guns. A proof of how Mossberg values its consumers in all walks of life.

Mossberg Maverick 88: Affordable and Reliable

Mossberg has been consistently delivering advancement in the firearms industry since the end of the First World War.

The Mossberg Maverick 88, as one of its products, is made to provide an inexpensive gun as well as a tool with exceptional performance for working-class gun enthusiasts.

It's an affordable version of the Mossberg 500 famous for its usefulness in home defense. In fact, these two shotguns allow interchangeable barrels to increase functionality and versatility for its valued consumers.

Gun Specs

The barrel lengths available for this Mossberg are 18.5, 20, 24, 26, and 28 inches. It features pump action 8-round maximum mag capacity and shoots 12 or 20 gauge (3″ chamber).

The stocks are black synthetic to comprise the gun's overall weight of 6.3 – 7 lbs. As a very affordable shotgun, the barrel finish is blued and the sights are expected to be adjustable or bead.

Ease of Use and Performance

Mossberg makes great shotguns so it's no surprise the Maverick 88 is as accurate and well-balanced as its shotgun brothers.

You will definitely feel a kick in firing 12 and 20-gauge ammunitions with no negative effect on its accuracy. It's accurate at about 40 to 50 yards and built for almost all weather conditions, rain or shine.

Pros and Cons

At 7 lbs this shotgun is lightweight, never jams with proper ammunition, and does the job pretty well. I also like it being compatible with Mossberg 500 interchangeable barrels because it does come in handy for those who own both gun models.

On the other hand, there's no question about this Maverick's durability, but the blued finish is subject to rust if not treated right. Some also say the pump action has some sort of resistance in cold weather.

Overall Verdict and Price

The price of $310 to purchase this gun is simply outshined by its performance. If you're up for the functionality of a shotgun, the Maverick 88 will not disappoint you.

The unsatisfactory aspect is always there considering how reasonably priced this firearm is, yet the positive still outweighs the negative. I would buy one of these for rugged use.

The quality of Mossberg shotguns is as good as other great brands. The Maverick 88 is clearly an economy model but a smoking deal at that.

It's comparable to the Mossberg 500 with a little difference like having the standard bolt safety as opposed to the tang safety. But overall, it's still one heck of a shotgun as expected from its manufacturers.
