OK Guys and Gals, if you remember earlier this week in my article “Time For A Little Fun,” I asked for your help in picking out a new book to read while the wife and I head of for a little rest and relaxation.
First off, I want to say thank you for all of the comments and the support!
After reading every single comment and the multiple emails that y’all sent me, I’ve made my decision(s).
I’m going to list out the survival fiction books below and a few other non survival suggestions that you guys gave me.
One Second After: An EMP hits a totally unprepared America. The story focuses on a small town in North Carolina struggling to survive and weigh life and death. Good storytelling and a believable account of what would unfold in this scenario. This book contains some good practical survival advice while also being an enjoyable read, but it relies heavily on the government ultimately coming to the rescue. That may be the only unrealistic aspect to this novel.
One second after was close in the running with Lucifer’s Hammer and I may still pick up that one if I finish One Second After earlier than I plan.
Distant Eden: This is the best book in terms of practical survival information with just enough of a story to keep you reading. The main characters are expert survivalists who have prepared for the EMP that takes down America. It involves a tight-knit family in Texas who make their way to their safe haven location at their father’s country house. This is a must-read for the useful prepping information alone.
I actually managed to pick up a copy of this for free on amazon kindle, I was going to post it up so that you all could get a copy of it too, but by the time I sat down to write it up, the promotion had already ended… just goes to show that it never hurts to check out the free books section on kindle!
Ok, so those are the two (possibly three) books that I have picked out for this particular “recharge”
But I also received so many emails urging me to take a complete break for all things survival and I’ve taken that to heart.
(thank you all again for the idea!)
So I wanted to include a few of my picks for non survival related books!
My wife picked up a copy of the first book in the “A Song Of Ice and Fire” (the Game of Thrones series from HBO).
Her and I picked up the first two seasons of this series and watched them in a single weekend (they were that addicting) and aside from the gratuitous sex scenes that add nothing to the story, it is a fantastically produced show. I can only hope the books are as good if not better!
I also checked out the third book from the Dexter series, “Dexter In The Dark,” I actually read the first two books on my last trip to Vegas and figure I might be able to squeeze this one in. If your not familiar with the Dexter Series, it is about a serial killer that… kills serial killers, it is phenomenally well written. (The inner monologue of Dexter and his “Dark Passenger” are creepy and at the same time darkly comedic.) It is also a television series on Showtime starring Michael C. Hall who, after reading the first couple of books, could not have been a better pick for the part of Dexter.
Now I figured I’d want some visual stimulation while on the plane ride and the subsequent layovers, so I opted to download a few things to my kindle fire.. I’ve had the thing for almost two years and didn’t know that I could download movies and series onto it and watch them without the internet… You learn something new every day. 🙂
So now I’m going to let my inner geek out… I picked the last half of the most recent season of Dr. WHO. I am a huge fan of this show and can’t wait for the next season to start (complete with a new Dr.) It is a major Sci-Fi show from the U.K and as far as I know it is the longest running Sci-Fi series if not the longest running series period. It started way back in the 1960’s but hasn’t lost any steam yet. If you have Amazon Prime or Netflix, you should check it out if you want a series that can keep you entertained for more than a couple of seasons. In fact almost all of them are free to watch (except for the second part of the last season)
Ok Guys and gals, that is it for my reading list on my vacation!
Thank you again for all of your support, I look forward to enjoying my time off and starting with fresh when I get back.
I’ve got a lot of reading to do and the real question is where do I start!
