Windham Weaponry Carbine Diamondhead Integrated
Unboxing a new firearm is probably one of the most exciting time for a gun enthusiast. You almost know what to expect as soon as you open the box, but the fascination always gets you as if it's the first time.
I remember unwrapping my new Windham Weaponry CDI, I couldn't wait to get my hands on a gun they made differently from most of their ARs. CDI stands for Carbine Diamondhead Integrated. You'd get the picture by now if you're familiar with other AR-15 rifles and accessories. It comes with a Diamondhead V-RS “X” free-floating handguard and a Picatinny rail stretching from the upper receiver combined with the full length of the handguard.
Gun Specs
This semi-automatic rifle has a 16-inch barrel chambered for .223 Rem/5.56mm NATO. It features a gas impingement system like most Windham WW 15 rifles with a magazine capacity of 30 rounds. The upper receiver is M4A4 type flat top made from forged 7075 T6 aircraft aluminum with a hard coat black anodized finish. Its 16-inch barrel has a chrome line with vortex flash suppressor from chrome-moly vanadium steel. The front and rear sights are both Diamondhead flip-ups and have Magpul MOE 6-position telescoping buttstocks. All these features make up an overall weight of 7 lbs.
Ease of Use and Performance
The CDI has great balance as with the other Windham Weapon rifles I know. My colleagues and I consumed a total of 18 magazines of ammo from a unit just out of the box and had zero malfunction or misfires. The trigger breaks at a nice 7 pounds but can be adjusted to your preference. Sight acquisition is easy with the built-in Diamondhead flip-up sights and an impressive accuracy for an M4 style carbine. This firearm is built as a true duty rifle with its durability and reliability in fieldwork.
Pros and Cons
The free-floating handguard reduces stress on the barrel as it also relieves some of the heat with its diamond-cut design. The uninterrupted Picatinny rail runs from the upper receiver through the whole length of handguard provides enough space to install your optics along with the related accessories of your choice.
The barrel's strength chrome line enhancement 4150 chrome-moly-vanadium steel. It also features a Vortex Slash suppressor which is compatible with blank-firing adapters. If there's one thing I'd want to change in this rifle, I still prefer the traditional M4 style handguard. It's not about the functionality. I just think it looks better with the old design so it's not that big a deal.
Windham Weaponry CDI Price and Overall Verdict
All the enhancements made on this rifle makes it a good buy at around $1680. I got mine for a few hundred dollars less from a friend looking to purchase a Beretta 2-shot rifle. This firearm has a similar design to the YHM Diamond Specter, particularly with its handguard.
