Gun Safe Dehumidifier: Which One Should You Get?

Feature | Gun Safe Dehumidifiers

Guns can develop rust over time, which is why you need to look into getting a gun safe dehumidifier for protection. Continue reading below to help you make the right purchase.

A Quick Guide on Buying a Gun Safe Dehumidifier

As your firearm collection grows, so does your need for accessories. And we’re not just talking about magazines, holsters, and ammunition. We’re also referring to safes and the proper storage and organization for your safes.

Safes vary in size from small single-firearm all the way up to entire rooms that house arsenals. As you move up to larger safes, you will likely see the need for shelving, lighting, and an alarm. But did you know that a gun safe dehumidifier is an important accessory in your safe as well?

As with anything else made of metal, guns are prone to rust if exposed to moisture over time. Keeping your guns clean and dry is an important step in maintaining them.

A gun safe dehumidifier will do just that, and there are two types to choose from: desiccant dehumidifiers and electric dehumidifiers.

1. Desiccant Dehumidifiers

Desiccant dehumidifiers suck up moisture from the air inside your safe without requiring the use of electricity. You can use them for several months before recharging them. Recharging requires heating.

Unlike electric dehumidifiers, desiccant dehumidifiers do not need to be plugged in, so you will not need to drill holes in your safe or keep your safe near an outlet. Desiccant dehumidifiers will never be hot to the touch, except immediately after charging in the oven.

Lockdown’s Silica Can Gel is a great option, as it will fit in any sized safe and can be easily recharged in the oven. It is inexpensive ($15-20) and easy to use: the silica beads change color from blue to orange when it needs to be charged. This option can last for months before needing to be recharged.

The Stack-On Spad-1500 Wireless Rechargeable Dehumidifier is another small desiccant dehumidifier. It does not require batteries, is easily recharged, and indicates its need for charge right on the front of it. The Spad-100 will keep your safe dry for about six weeks before needing a charge. It runs about $30.

2. Electric Dehumidifiers

Despite the ease of use and inexpensive price tag on desiccant dehumidifiers, electric dehumidifiers remain the preferred choice to keep your gun safe dry. The longevity and reliability of the electric models make them more of a “plug and play” option. Rather than check every few weeks or months on their effectiveness, you will feel it in the air when you open your safe.

However, you will need to drill a hole in your safe for the cord to run through, and you will need access to an outlet to plug the dehumidifier in.

Our top picks for electric dehumidifiers are the Lockdown Original Dehumidifier Rod and the Goldenrod Original Gun Safe Dehumidifier. These and other similar dehumidifier rods can be purchased for $25-55 and all work the same way. You can mount them to the bottom of your safe and simultaneously dry and heat your safe by releasing warm air.

Electric dehumidifiers do not typically get too hot to touch, but depending on the size of your safe, you may need more than one.

What to Get?

No matter what your budget, preferences, or the size of your safe is, there is a dehumidifier that will meet your needs. Purchasing and installing one will help tremendously in maintaining clean, dry, and rust-free firearms. All you need to do is decide which one suits your needs best!
